Show Parents of autistic children to meet A meeting for parents of children with autism will be held Wednesday, Wednes-day, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. at Morgan Elementary in Kaysville. The speaker will be Susan Clare, a special education consultant and former teacher of children with autism. au-tism. She will discuss the characteristics characteris-tics of autism and the teaching methods used in the autism classroom. clas-sroom. Autism is a severe developmental developmen-tal disability that usually occurs within the first three years of life. It can be characterized by lack of speech or repetitive speech, limited li-mited understanding of ideas, abnormal ways of relating to people peo-ple and objects, abnormal responses re-sponses to touch or pain, slow development, de-velopment, and lack of physical, social and learning skills. Some autistic au-tistic children have distinct skills in particular areas such as music or mathematics. Autistic children can benefit from highly structured classroom training which includes language and social skills instruction. Autism occurs in approximately five of every 10,000 births, and is four times more common in boys than girls. Anyone interested in autism is invited to the meeting.
