Show Weed Control Program Explained The Duchesne county weed eradication program is going forward for-ward with generally satisfying results, according to County Agent Ag-ent Emer Broadbent and Weed Supervisor James Bacon. Using the new chemical 2-4-D which kills noxious weeds by causing a sudden and too rapid growth in the plant, spraying operations will be continued throughout the county while the factors governing govern-ing weed eradication through 2-4-D remain favorable. Although 2-4-D is still in its experimental stage recent use of the chemical has shown it to be the most effective method yet used for weed control. It may be applied with any type of hand spray, but a thorough wetting of plants is necessary to obtain the required results, and according to Mr. Broadbent it kills all types of weeds, willows, rose bushes and trees. However, it, does not affect grasses, grain or corn. "Spraying when plants are too young and small will not kill I the weeds," advised Mr. Broad-1 bent. "There is a more abundant re-growth from shoots that are below the surface at the. time of application, and spraying before these shoots appear above the ground render the use of 2-4-D ineffective. Plants that develop a rosette -such as white top and thistles should be treated after a pood leaf surface has developed," develop-ed," Mr. Broadbent concluded. Persons desiring to have weed control work done are asked to contact the office of the county agent. |
