Show HOME ON LEAVE Pfc. Charles B. Mathews, son of Mrs. Eaith Mathews is home on leave after spending 27 months in the South Pacific. He . enlisted October 20, 1941, in the Marines and went overseas October Oc-tober 12, 1942. Has had four at-. at-. tacts of Maleria and was hospitalized hos-pitalized 10 weeks in Australia. He participated in three major campaigns at Guadalcanal, November, No-vember, 1942; New Britian, December, De-cember, 1943; Palau, November, 1944. At Palau there were 15,000 killed and wounded, his Patoon were all missing but he and one other. Pfc. Mathews was wounded wound-ed in the back with shrapnel. He was awarded the Purple heart December 13, 1944 and re-. re-. ceived the Presidential citation. He arrived in the states December Decem-ber 26, 1944, for a 30-day leave - and has gone back to Taft, California Cal-ifornia to spend the rest of his leave with relatives and friends. He has to go to the hospital when 1 his leave is up and will report to Vallejo, California February 3rd. |
