Show MEN WIT H COUNTY 1100 JOB commissioners succeed in adding greatly to local payroll great encouragement in the u unemployment situation in sevier county is derived from the announcement no made by moroni jensen that the county commissioners have succeeded in their efforts to get et the state road commission to J alo ga allow w the work of hauling gravel for the stretch of highway 89 from elsinore to the mouth of sevier canyon to be handled by local men and teams instead of letting the contract to an outsider who would ti do the work with kith trucks the county commissioners met liere here in richfield last friday night march 25 with state road com inis henry H blood and other members of his commission including preston peterson J W parker E C knowlton and district road engineer J E garn gam to discuss particularly the oiling and graveling of this 97 mile project south of elsinore the state road commission has been ready for some time to p pay y its share of the expense of tl this ais job but the sevier county commissioners ners were reluctant to put up their money without the assurance that the most of it would be used to furnish labor for local people especially under present conditions of unemployment relief need in view of the fact that some federal aid is being received for this road work it looked as if it would be necessary to advertise for bids and of course the low bidder would be the contractor with trucks which could haul the gravel at a cost of from 8 to loc per yard per mile in the conference between the local commissioners and state officials last friday night an agreement was reached whereby the hauling contract will be let to men with teams paying per yard per mile for this work mr jenson jensen states that this will mean the expenditure of approximately locally for labor the crushing mixing and oiling work will necessarily go to contractors with equipment for that work men and teams will be able to earn 4 and up for a days work at the rate offered work will start about may 1 while this new plan will cost the county a little more money the commissioners feel that the county will much more than get it back in another way through additional wages paid out to local men the reaper feels that this was a very wise act on the part of the commissioners and thoroughly in keeping with the preaching and practice of this newspaper to KEEP MONEY AT HOME following the meeting referred to above mr jensen called a session of the chairman and their associates in the relief work being carried on oil in the various towns of the county to see if they approved this action of the commissioners ners this meeting was held at the court house monday evening and was attended by or more people who passed a resolution supporting the commissioners and expressing their appreciation of their stand on the matter the local county officials and the state road commission have been working in absolute harmony on projects of mutual interest the county realizes that it would not have been able to put over this work without the coop cooperation ration of the state and there is is no question that the concession by the road commission to allow this work to be done by men with teams is a distinct favor and highly commendable |
