| Show HOE LIONS CLUB FF I 1 N unemployment hear reports on road projects of great importance to county the lions club of monroe held a busy and important meeting in the city library monday evening with president V J in charge after the preliminary work was over V L israelson was initiated as a member of the club and a rousing welcome was given him reed W magleby was reinstated into the club commander ferdinand Erick erickson sol of the monroe post of the american legion was present and asked the cooperation of the club in the winters dances that revenue might be raised by each for welfare volk in helping the poor of the community hearty cooperation was gladly granted and a special effort will be made by each organization to render assistance during the depression and period of unemployment reports were nere heard beard from the finance publicity and education committees A prize will be offered to the most outstanding male student in the monroe high school this year commander erickson gave an address on the aims of the american legion at their national convention held in detroit stating that they are working for a plan that aims to eliminate future wars by advocating the conscription of industries and wealth as well as man power the legion recognizes that when there is no chance for profiteering the chance of war is greatly lessened mr erickson also referred to the lions code of ethics wherein they promise aid to those who are unfortunate and in need and spoke of their duty in the crisis through which the country is passing J B burns of the engineering department of the state road office was present he is here surveying the new secondary state highway from the sugar factory through monroe to joseph and will be engaged in surveying about three weeks after which work will commence which will believe the unemployment situation as local labor will be used A report on the monroe lions major project which is a road into monroe canyon was made by chairman elliott larsen of the road committee he said the regional engineer of the forestry foi estry department will not be here until early in october to make an investigation of the necessity and feasibility of such a road there is is every reason to think this will receive favorable consideration as there is at present no road into this canyon where fish abound and scenic beauty is unsurpassed uniforms for the high school band were considered and a committee named to secure these at an early date for the boys and girls ladies night will be held by the club next week at the hot springs |
