| Show POST FOB THE BUCK WITH A mam TUG TAG reflections on the seyen seven prong er killed by W S greenwood several weeks ago we published the story of a buck killed by W S greenwood on which buck was found a tag bearing the inscription manti 1929 lt the notice closed with a for information and now comes an interesting discussion from the U S forest office dealing with the peculiar mccu occurrence arence the communication is signed by forest supervisor C A mattsson and reads on october 23 1929 the fourth day of the hunting season for the killing of deer W S greenwood of richfield Sich field utah killed a seven prong ed buck deer about one mile west of the rockwood ranger station on district 2 of the fish lake national forest upon skinning this buck an aluminum dangle octagon in shape was found just under the hide back of the right front shoulder this dangle dangl was ewas designated 1929 manti this dangle could not possibly become buried underneath the skin by the ahe deer rolling on it and the assumption is therefore that it must have been inserted by human hands during the spring of 1929 cattle permitted on the manti forest were tagged at sit bit pleasant spring city and ephraim and the tags were numbered 7 serially but the dangles used with the tags contained only the words 1929 manti 11 several theories are advanced not only concerning the means used to insert ap this s dg dangle in the hide of the deer but also concerning the purpose or motive for tagging this deer the most likely theory is that some person secured this dangle for use on one of his permitted cattle but in instead of using it for the purpose authorized either used it or allowed it to be used by someone in tagging this deer when there was deep snow on the ground and when this deer was weak and poor and could be handled with but little difficulty assuming that the dangle was placed in this deer in ephraim canyon the nearest canyon to the fish lake forest it is evident that deer travel considerably either before or during the hunting season because ephraim canyons can canyon yonis is approximately seventy five miles from the locality where this luck buck was killed if this deer was tagged near mt pleasant or spring city the length of travel would be farther however it may possibly be that some person secured one of these dangles and brought it to the fish lake forest and tagged this deer in the locality where it was killed but this theory has but little merit it is evident that this deer was tagged during the spring of 1929 because the dangle is a 1929 dangle used on the manti forest the motive or purpose for tagging this deer is unknown who did actually tag thic deer were other deer tagged at the same time when and where was this deer caged these are unanswered questions |
