| Show DID THE DEMOCRATS WIN ON ACCOUNT OR IN SPITE OF THE ME TARIFF ab the remarkable victory won by the democrats all over the country and especially in the east in the last election is being widely discussed in the newspapers and in many of them especially in democratic publications it is pointed out that the enactment of the ariff law by the last congress is the reason for it they claim also that their opposition was based upon the desire to save the consumer in view of 0 this claim it is quite a relevant question did they win on account or in spite of that opposition to the tariff law we are inclined to answer in spite the real attitude of the opponents toward the american consumer can be best and accurately ascertained by a reference to the records the importing interests are buying hundreds of millions of dollars worth of goods abroad what hat they pay for them is evidenced by the invoices at the american customhouses what hat they sell them for to the american consumer is a matter which can be ascertained at the counter of the large department stores according to the records which are in evidence a certain style of pocket knives made abroad are being imported into this country at cents a piece and being sold by the stores which imported them tor for a clear profit to the importing stores of 2170 per cent another style of pocket knife which contains three blades and a file Is being imported into this country for 96 cents and being sold by the importing stores for a profit of per cent 1 another style of pocket knife which contains one blade one file and ono one email pir of scissors is being imported into this country for cents and sold a it retail by the importing store tor for a profit of 1250 pr per cent japanese cups and saucers are being imported into thi this s country for cents a dozen and are being sold at retail by the importing stores lor for a dozen a clear profit of 1035 per cent I 1 I 1 electric flat irons are imported tor for 19 cents and sold by the importing concern to the consumers for a clear profit of per cent A clock imported for is being sold at retail by the importing interests at a clear profit of 2309 per cent this list could be continued until it enumerated hundreds upon hundreds of articles which are being brought into this country and sold to the consumers at figures which will enable the importing interests to reap profits from 1000 per cent to per cent from this it is perfectly apparent that the importing interests opposed to the enactment of a protective tariff are opposed to it because it would stop their robbing the american consumer and making inordinate profits moreover under the present conditions which they would have continued these importing interests are destroying american industry as well as robbing the american consumer As president harding stated one cannot be astonished that there is a complaint from both american producer and consumer you cannot afford to destroy american industry to fo facilitate an imbor importing ing trade like that these importing influences have no motive other than greed they have no concern for tho the prosperity of 0 their country they have no concern for the interests of the american consumer they are out to destroy the american manufacturer because it profits them to do so they have no concern for the american laboring man who depends upon american industry for his employment they would shut down american factories and make of this country a nation of hucksters and peddlers in order to till fill their pockets az r the enactment enactment of a protective tariff did not aoi raise the retail price oi of a single bingle article what it did was to raise the price of imported goods to such euch a point that these large mercantile interests are unable to buy goods abroad cheaper than they could buy them of manufacturers in this country this gives business to the american manufacturer and employment to the american laboring rilan man but it does not change the retail price one cent |
