Grey, director of the American Farm Bureau Federation's Federa-tion's legislative department, recently re-cently presented a plea for more rapid expansion of farm to market, mar-ket, secondary read - systems. Ht presented facts to show that about 46 per cent of all forms are still located cn totally unimproved unimprov-ed roads which have been improved im-proved in varying degrees; that poor roads increase the farmer's cost of transportation to market, prevent him from marketing his products at the most advantageous advantag-eous time, and retard his social development. He also pointed out that road work during the past year provided pro-vided employment for 1,000,000 workers, directly and in the industries in-dustries manufacturing road materials. ma-terials. Public money spent for highways prcbably benefits mora people, cn a dollar for dollar basis, bas-is, than any other type of government govern-ment expenditure. In the past, the development of secondary reads was delayed by the high cost. This has been overcome over-come by the perfection of modern asphaltic surfaces, which provide a weatherproof, long wearing road at an extremely small outlay. out-lay. Good roads for the farmer are necessary to his progress, and the benefits they bring arc reflected re-flected in all lines of business, and in all parts of the nation. |
