Show The Speedy Bremen While airplane records of various kinds seldom hold good for more than a few days or a few weeks, ship records often stand unbroken for many years. Therefore, the new trans-Atlantic record set few days ago by the great German liner Bremen Bre-men on her maiden voyage from Cherbourg Cher-bourg to New York is something more 3 than just another stunt. The Bremen's time in crossing was ' j 4 days, 18 hours and 17 minutes, or 3 hours and 17 minutes Jaster than that of . the Maurentania, which has been the queen of the seas for several years. It is estimated that the caravels cara-vels of Columbus, had they followed present-day steamer lanes, would have taken 69 days to reach the New World. The Savannah, the first steamer to cross the Atlantic, took 26 days between be-tween Savannah and Liverpool in 1819 In 1840 the Britannia, first Cunard liner, steamed from Liverpool to New York in 14 days 8 hours. In 1869 the Brussels made the same voyage in 7 days 22 hours. Considering the comparative slowness slow-ness with which steamer speed has been increased, the feat of the Bremen Bre-men is all the more remarkable. It gives rival steamship companies a shining mark to shoot at. i |
