Show Why Have a Poor House? Why have a Poor House or County Infirmary in Sanpete County? Do the good people of Sanpete County give this matter mat-ter any serious thought? The very question itself may startle some and seem a little bit foolish. But, never mind how foolish it may seem. Let us do a little thinking. think-ing. There are far better ways of caring for the poor than to have a number of old people g-athered together in one place, all .of them more or less miserable, many of them dissappointed failures and victims of unfortunate cir-cumstances, cir-cumstances, mingling with each other in an atmosphere of disappointment. Now, let us think about this matter seriously. It seems to us a very sad state of affairs. What a sad ending end-ing to one's life! Can we picture the pitiful ending of some old person in a place of that kind? Some of the saddest deaths we have heard of occur in places of this kind. Think of one longing for friends and relatives in their last days and hours, and no one comes. How would it be to give these old people about half ,the amount of money which it costs the county per month under the present method and let them live in. luxury with friends and relatives ! It would be a big saving to the county and a happy ending for these unfortunate un-fortunate people. Then lease the Poor Farm or sell it to private individuals and collect some revenue on it. The best place in the world for anyone to be is among his friends. And thirty dollars per month, or half the present cost, will go a long way in supporting an old person among friends. They could live in comfort and happiness. There may be much better plans than this one. But we query "Why Maintain a Poor House?" j |
