Show The Vikes are still steaming over the one point loss to Woods Cross last week but they better concentrate on the Rams and their new wishbone attack. Both clubs have potent offenses and some see this as a high scoring affair. I I It's Vikings' Air Against Ranis' Bone By DAVE WIGHAM Clipper Sports VIEWMONT -- The best thing the Viking football team can do in preparing for Highland this week is to forget about what happened last week. When the Rams head into Viking territory terri-tory this Friday at 7:30 p.m. battle it will pit one team on an emotional high against another that is down in the dumps a little. THE RAMS CAME to town with the sweet feeling of a come from behind overtime win over Bountiful in their first region outing while the Vikes are trying to bounce back from a heart breaking 21-20 loss to Woods Cross in their league opener. A win by the Vikes would throw them right back into the state picture while another loss would push them furtherdown the Iadderand it could make their trek to state a little rough to say the least. It's too early to call these games 'must wins' but it would sure make life easier for the Vikes if they could get into the big W column. IF THE VIKES arc to pull this one off then they'll have to conlend with the vaunted Ram wishbone. The concern of the Viking coaches is the fact that Ihis type of offense, the wishbone, wish-bone, is the type you can contain for a while only in sec it btc:ik loose. Thai was the story in part last week as Bountiful more or less held the Rams in cheek for three periods only to see them run wild in the final quarter. Of the three options from the wishbone the most productive, and the one the Rams use the most, is the pitch to halfback Keith Lapotti. This guy is the bread and butter of the offense, a good quick runner who is hard nosed. The simple straight ahead dive play seems to be the second favorite option of the Rams. The one option they don't seem to utilize very often is the quarterback running the ball. No matter what their favorite options have been the Rams offense seems to look for something that works and then stick with it. VIEWMONT'S offense has played well for two straight weeks. In both the Skyline win and the Woods Cross loss the offense has rolled rol-led up over 350 yards of total offense. They can move the ball and they make no secret of the fact they will do it through the air. Bountiful has some success in throwing against Rams and the Highland secondary better put on their track shoes because the pigskin is going to be thrown. The Viking defense has really played well of late as well, to be truthful the defense has played play-ed well all season, and they'll need another strong performance this week. A key will be the physical state of middle linebacker Troy Ciortal who missed the final period of the Woods Cross game with a sprained ankle. If he's unable to go then the Vikes will have a big hole to fill. The Woods Cross game was a good warmup for the Highland game since the Cats, like the Rams, are a big team who like to run. Viewmont's line held their own with the Cats and they'll need another standoff, or better, against the Rams. IF IT comes down to a kicking game things could be interesting. Viewmont has a great punter in Bret Beeton while the Rams have a great field goal kicker. Highland is bigger but the Vikings arc much faster and quicker. People like Lonnic King, Kirk Tidwell, Jeff Sowell and Wade Bevans will make life rough on the Rams while the Ram size could take it's toll on Mark Zesiger, John Stubbs or Shawn Pully. Viewmont has proven they can move the football on teams the big question this week is can they stop the wishbone. wish-bone. THEY HAVE played one common opponent this year with both of them taking on Skyline in prc-scason. The Rams won 24-21 while the Vikes pasted the Eagles 30-6 a couple of weeks ago. It's a tough one to call especially with the availability of Gortat up in the air at this writing. writ-ing. The Vikes need Troy, both on offense and defense, to ensure the win. |
