Show . 1 Gowns, robes, frocks, blouses and petticoats were worn by men as everyday attire. The gown, a thousand thou-sand years ago, was a robe of fur worn by monks, who were feeble or in Ill-health. Today university students, stu-dents, clergymen and lawyers all wear gowns. Nowadays, when a parson It dismissed from the church he Is said to be "unfrocked." Frocks originally were big gowns with large, open I sleeves, and were worn as an outside robe by monks and friars, says the Detroit News. The frock of today owes Its origin to that first frock sported by the old friars and monks. So, too, does the smock-frock which countrymen once wore. A man's short coat was once known as a pettycoat, and that word survives today to describe de-scribe the underskirt worn by women. Knights of old wore a silk overall to protect their gleaming armor from rain and sun, and this was known as a blouse. |
