Show f HISTIS SEAL III THEJED CROSS Once again those two great organizations are face to face with their annual drives for funds necessary to carry on the great work that each is doing. Each organization has its peculiar pe-culiar field of service A commendable com-mendable altruistic service for humanity and each deserves the support and cooperation of the public. The United States Public Health Association of which the Utah Public Health Association As-sociation is a branch many years ago preempted or adopted adop-ted the little penny Christmas seal as its means of appeal to the public, and it selected the , Christmas season as the mostj propitious time to make this appeal. The Christmas Seal has therefore became inseparably insepar-ably associated with Christmas and the Christmas Seal Sale like any Avell advertised trade mark such as the "Gold Dust Twins" proclaims tb.2 genuiness of the wares or the worthiness of the cause and protects the public against imitations, imi-tations, frauds and infringements, infringe-ments, and therefore consti tutes our stock in trade, without with-out which we should be without with-out appeal or identity. The season of the year at which this is brought to the attention oi people is quite as important as the seal itself as no one would dream of buying Christmas Seals at any other time than Christmas. The Red Cross also has its "Trade Mark," known the world over, which proclaims its cause and its work to all who see it. Since the close of the war it has selected "Armistice Day" as the day upon which to begin its membership campaign cam-paign or its drive for funds. IThe drive ends November 30, and the Christmas Seal Sale begins on December 1. Armistice Armis-tice Day was selected because it was the day upon which hostilities were suspended m u, n Wor- TItp nature of each organizations work gives rise to great sympathy between them but the the arrangement made for their annual campaigns cam-paigns have brought them into I sharp conflict with each other and makes them antagonize m the phase of the work where they can do each other most " barm, for without funds or with nnv en rtailment of funds the work of each must suffer. This fact is emphasized when te it is taken into consideration is that this is the time of the year e vrhen heavy expenses fall upon every individual and every business, and any additional drain will work a hardship. What is worse it gives the " whole system of Public Chanties Chan-ties in whatever form practiced Al the appearance of "gouging s' fnd is very apt to materially affect adversely that fine co-sS co-sS operative spirit which the Utah w Public Health Associationjvas fl) (continued on last page) THE CHRISTMAS SEAL AND THE RED CROSS . (continued from first page) cultivated and endeavored to preserve. In the public mind it creates the impression that one is trying to "beat" the other to what money the people peo-ple have to give to such causes. With workers in Public Health there is the feeling that their cause has been placed very much at a disadvantage because be-cause of their having to solicit funds in a field and among a constituency that has just been canvassed by the Red Cross. The work of the Public Health Association is to eradicate eradi-cate that dreaded though preventable pre-ventable disease, tuberculosis, and to promote general health measures among the school children with the hope that these will be taken into the homes and thus raise the whole standard of health. It is therefore there-fore of very vital concern, immediately im-mediately and directly to every home in the community. At the present time the Utah Public Health Association repaying re-paying the salary of (he 7iurs in public health service in this state and is giving thai service to North Sanpete free of charge. Tins is the first time in the history of the I'tah Pub lie Health Association that it has paid the full salary of the fi'lrse. I he nurse has direct el large of the health work in our schools and in addition is giving much of her time in making necessary "home calls," delivering health talks and aiding the cause of public health. Support both of these meritorious meri-torious causes but in fairness to yourselves, it is suggested that you remember the Chris tmas Seals and their mission among you. |
