Show DO YOU WANT TO KEEP THE HONOR RATION IN YOUR TOWN? ; Sugar is not ours. It is a commodity that now belongs to the United States Govern- ment just as the railroad and telegraph systems do. There is enough sugar for everyone for all purposes if the people will have confidence and be fair in its use. Sanpete's population is 17,-000. 17,-000. The total allotment for our county for July 1 was R4,-297 R4,-297 pounds. That meant practically prac-tically 5 pounds per person, 2 pounds per person over the allowance al-lowance for household use. This surplus was to have taken care of the preserving of fruits and vegetables. Reports show that this surplus has been used up, and means that every fami ly has called for the full 25 pounds, whether it was needed or not. Whereas the allotment meant that only 25 per cent of the families were to have been cared for on the 25 pound basis. It was intended that small families not needing the 25 pounds would take just what was necessary, having confidence confid-ence that they would again get their allotment the following month. This not being understood under-stood a sugar famine has resulted, re-sulted, and allotments have been reduced for August. Is a written pledge ""only a piece of paper? ' ' Each woman pledged herself to ask for just what was needed and to return any surplus each month so all could be supplied. Mr. Armstrong asks that neighbors pool their sugar, where one family can spare a little this month sell it to one that needs it, and those who have sugar stored report it back to the grocer so that the heavy damning in September may be taken care of. This is really the first pinch we have felt. It isn't a question of getting all the sugar Ave can it is a question of doing with as little as possible so that our state's allotment can be evenly distributed among our people here. The fighting forces abroad will be taken care of by the Government. The fighting forces at home will have to take what is left. It is a chance for the women to be generous- hearted and think not each one for herself alone, but for here neighbor. Utah has already received re-ceived a larger allotment of sugar than any other state. When the situation is understood under-stood we are sure that those who have sugar on hand in any amount, will divide 'with others. It just means all having hav-ing a little rather than some having none and a few having much. |
