Show THE GREAT EMANCIPATOR L.;st Wednesday was the anniversary anniver-sary of the birth of Atiraham Lincoln Lin-coln It may ?eem a repetition to discuss thit most honored ;f American Ameri-can citizens tince Geirge Washington, Washing-ton, but the life and achi. v. merits of this simple, plain honest man were Fuch that they are ueuVd as an object ob-ject lesson to the people of to day, jind, if the fictitious clauses of society soci-ety that ure being sought to be established es-tablished and extended, are to be i removed irmi our civilization, there must b constant kept efo:e the I; people, es.-pee.ully the childw... the j fciph and nook- lives of our ,;re;t men of the past. Although deprived of the opportunity op-portunity to attend schools, denied the means that is ordinarily considered consid-ered an absolute necessity in the acquirement ac-quirement of an education, Lincoln with a determination seldom equalled, equal-led, succeeded in raising himself to a plane of intellegence and knowledge know-ledge reached only by the person of rare mental acumen. A rise from obscurity to the highest high-est office in gift of the nation did riot corrupt the high ideals of Lincoln and on every occasion until the close of his strenuous life, he was engaged en-gaged in the performarce of some great act that would help those in distress. Coming from the common people, he knew their needs and sympathized with them anc" his success and prominence did not cause him for a moment to forget them or look upon them as being inferior in-ferior to or beneath him. In these days when money is considered con-sidered by many as a standarad of worth, the pure, humanly christ-like life of Lincoln is needed more than ever to be kept before the people as an example to be followed. If we are to be saved from the curse of aristocracy; if we are to remain a liberty-loving, justice-demanding nation, we must teach, preach and follow the lives of noble characters, chief of vhom in America was Abraham Lincoln, than whom no greater man has ever lived. We are thankful for having had a Lincoln. |
