Llmon, a Chicago, Rock l.sk'nd & Pacific Pa-cific freight conductor, was shot and killed -Sunday morning by an unknown un-known tramp who previously had held j up and robbed Brakeman Norman D. i Roed of Marts' train, and who now is ! a fugitive before posses of deputy sheriffs. When the freight train stopped on the side track to permit the passage of a passenger train, Norman D. Reed, the brakeman, discovered a man beneath be-neath one of the cars and ordered him to Ret out. The tramp answered the order by coming toward the brake-man brake-man with a drawn revolver and took from Reed a gold watch, $2 in coin and a pay check for $100. As quickly as possible, Reed called for help and -with Conductor Marts started across the prairie after the robber. Near a lone tree they lost track of the fugitive. Marts returned with his lantern to the tree and discovered dis-covered the Tobber hiding there. His order to surrender was answered by a shot and Marts fell, fatally wounded. wound-ed. Reed then ran to the station for help and on returning to the tree .found that the body of Marts had been robbed. No trace of the criminal crimi-nal has been found, although a posse Is scouring the country. |
