Show SUGGESTIONS i FDRTHEFARMER if t Important Facts Told By Experts ' of the Utah Agriculture I College 1 HOUSING MACHINERY A machine that is exposed to weather wea-ther the entire year, and is seldom oiled or painted, will not last longer than five years at the most. A machine ma-chine that it well tended and stored in a dry place, when not in use, will probably give service for fifteen years. It is the experience of successful suc-cessful farmers that a machine that is well cared for will last three times as long as one that is exposed to -weather conditions. 'The Farm Mechanics Me-chanics Department of the Utah Agricultural Ag-ricultural College advises that before storing the machinery away, all bright and working parts should be well oiled. The other portions of the i machine should be painted. Oil and j paint protect the machine from rust and rot. The machine should be stored away with regard for the time and order in which they will be used. IMPORTANCE OF PRUNING j Pruning according to Dr. L. D. Bachelor of the Utah Agricultural College is one of the most important factors in the production ot cnoicu fruit. It is sometimes little under- , stood, yet all realize that it is neces- ary. It is said to assist nature and nust be done for some special pur-jose. pur-jose. There can be no definite rules or pruning. Each tree presents au ndividual problem which must be ;olved by the best judgement of the ne who is pruning it. Each and ivery tree should be given its full ihare of fruit. Intelligent, light and regular prun-ng prun-ng forms possibly the only good gen-;ral gen-;ral rule. Reasons for pruning may 3e summarized briefly as follows: (1) to form the tree according to the grower's ideal. (2) To secure a good strong framework. (3) To promote growth or retard it. (4) To produce ;he best possible fruit. (5) To remove re-move crowding, diseased, broken, or undesirable limbs. (6) To form a tree that is capable of producing the best possible fruit. CARE OF FATTENING CATTLE IN WINTER According to the Animal Husbandry Husband-ry department of the. Utah Agricultural Agricul-tural College regularity is one of the first principles of good feeding. When an animal is used to getting its food at a certain t:me each day, it will rise and look for it as regularly as clockwork clock-work and if disappointed, will become impatient and fret. This weakens the digestive organs and they are not in a, fit condition to digest and assimilate assimi-late food to the best advantage. Another An-other important item is to make the cattle comfortable. The animals must be treated kindly if the best results are to be obtained. MILKING MACHINES " There are fourteen different kinds ot milking machines on sale in Victoria, Vic-toria, Australia, used by approximately approximate-ly 2,000 farmers. The principle advantage ad-vantage of the milking machine is that it makes the farmer practically independent of labor. Their use if increasing year by year and they are particularly successful where heifers are first broken into the machines. It has been found that the milk keeps well and that there is infinitely less trouble with sore teats. The Utah Agricultural College dairy department is now experiment-ins experiment-ins with a milking machine and Prof Geo. I!, t'aine slates that he will be :il!o to give the results of the experiment exper-iment within a short time. |
