Show Usos Fortune For Life The estate of Edward Stephen Harkness, financier and philanthropist, philan-thropist, who vdied January 21, ly40, has paid a total tax of $37,-414,351. $37,-414,351. This is an immense sum, representing rep-resenting more than one-third of the net estate of $93,514,887. Of the tax, the Federal Government Govern-ment received $26,627,875, the State of New York $10,773,225 and small sums went to three o'.her states. It is worth noting that the balance of the estate, approximately approxi-mately $55,000,000, will eventually eventu-ally go to various charities. Moreover, during his lifetime, Mr. Harkness made 384 gifts of $50,000 or more to charitable, religious and educational institutions, insti-tutions, amounting to $177,741.-101. $177,741.-101. Altogether, his gifts exceed $225,000,000. In giving generously to the public during his lifetime and in leaving the bulk of his estate to various public beneficiaries, Mr. Harkness follows the example of many rich men, who, having made tremendous fortunes in this country, use them only for life and" then generously give them to the public at large. |
