Show Time To, Be Specific Public discussion of issues involved in the coming municipal election hasn't, at this date, got to a stage that could be called 'heated". So far, although the elections are less than three weeks away Tuesday, November 4 one hears little talk of the problems which those elected will be called upon to face. Last week, through its chairman, John N. Christopher, the Democratic party outlined its platform for publication. Meantime, the Citizen's party is, according to its leaders, still framing a platform. Platforms are, of course, a necessary part of any election elec-tion even though they are couched in general terms. The public has the right to know, in a general way, what a party par-ty and its candidates stand for. Eut the public also has the right to know what a party and its candidates stand for specifically. That's why the Pyramid expresses the hope now that the Citizen and Democratic candidates for mayor and coun-cilmen coun-cilmen will, during the short time left between now and election, go beyond the generalities of platforms and tell us of the voting public in all candor where they stand on specific issues. How, for instance, do the candidates feel about current flood control efforts? Are they ready to support the continuance con-tinuance of such efforts? And what about public sanitation? Are the candidates for city office satisfied with current standards of sanitation in Mt. Pleasant. If so, why? If not, what better program are they prepared to offer? It's a minor item, but what do the candidates for your vote intend to do about the compellina problem of weed control? Does a citizen ask too much if he expects his city government to at least arrange for a mower to cut down the weeds that have grown hip-high in the very main streets of the town? Certainly, if specific problems like the above are hashed and rehashed for the benefit of the voting public it will be better informed and better equipped to perform its sacred duty a' duty permitted only to free peoples choice by secret ballot of public officials. |
