Show 'DRIVERS KNOW SAFETY RULES Applicants for Utah drivers' licenses prove by their written examination ex-amination they know all driving rules and then, by flunking driving driv-ing tests, prove they don't know how to obey those rules. This fact was brought out in a recent study by H. P. Leatham, state drivers license division director, direc-tor, which revealed that of 1561 applicants who took the written test, 80 passed, but of 1680 persons per-sons who took driving test, only 70 obeyed road rules. "Drivers just don't drive as well as they know how to drive," Mr. Leatham remarked. "On their best behavior at the side of a state examiner, 10 of them still cannot concentrate on good driving driv-ing long enough to pass a road test on the subpect," he said. Mr. Leatham said the most ex- perienced drivers are the ones that ' give examiners the worst demonstration demon-stration of driving ability. "They have become victims of sloppy driving habits which they cannot shake off even though they j know road rules," he said. Most common driving test errors er-rors are failure to stop at a stop sign not 10 or 15 feet beyond it; failure to make proper signals! when turning from lane to lane, I and improper turning. j "We even have drivers taking ! the test commit speeding viola-1 tions such as traveling 30 miles per hour past a school with 20 mile speed limits painted on thej street," he said. 1 1 |
