Show Gov't. Economists See Best Christmas in 4 Years On the basis of official and pri- j vate figures available at Washington Washing-ton government experts predict! that the country will this year en-1 joy the best Christmas trade in 4 years. The public has more money and is in a better mood to spend. Hence the experts say that cash registers will jingle as they haven't done since 1930. John Dickinson, Assistant Secretary cf Commerce, declared he saw in the improved retail trade the basis for "sound recovery." In making their predictions of 'greater spending this Christmas officials relied on Federal statistics statis-tics showing increased farm income, in-come, higher factory pay ivUs, increased in-creased government emergency expenditures ex-penditures for job-creating projects, proj-ects, more stable bank conditions, and on what they interpreted as a more confident optimistic frame of mind on the part of the people. "The prospects for a big Christmas Christ-mas trade," Dickinson said, "show very clearly the state of mind a satisfied and optimistic state of mind. "All of the evidence indicates the people are in a greater spending spend-ing mood, but not for reckless -spending such as we saw seme years ago. This mood to buy can be directly attributable to mere employment and more money in the people's pockets." The statisticians checked closely estimates that farm income this year will be nearly a billion dollars dol-lars greater than 1933, rising from 55,051.000,000 to about six billion dollars. October was figured at S736.000.000 against S622.000.000 a year ago. A god part of this rural wealth is expected to go directly into the retail trade. Offlc'als believe it will swell the buying lcoked for from the $350.-000.000 $350.-000.000 to $371,000,000 now beins diTributed by banks throughout the country to their Christmas club depositors. |
