Show Accident is Absurd Name Guns Children Accident is an absurd name foi injuries and deaths caused by guns in homes. One person in cen'ral California collected 60 clippings of such cases in 11 months of 1934. One person in New York City collected 60 similar clippings during the same time. Both limited their collections collec-tions to children fifteen years of age or less. Most cf the dispatches, both eastern and western, report that the guns were in homes, were known to be there, were aimed at people. The other cases were games of bandit, cowboy, Indian, kidnapping or backyard targets. A child of three killed his mother moth-er who was in bed with a new born baby. The pistol was under her pillow. A boy suicide killed his mother with the same bullet that killed him. A girl of fifteen killed both her parents. A boy seven years old killed hi.i grandmother. A boy of eight took his father's pistol to school to show off with among his 40 playmates. He shot himself and terrorized the children chil-dren and the teacher. There were several suicides of children who had been censured at schcol or threatened at home. When deadly weapons are kept in homes, children know they an there. In a moment cf rage, or showing off, or careless handling, the guns are within reach. The final results are the fault of the owners of the guns and should be called by right names. Carelessness Careless-ness is too mild a name. Accident is an absurd name. Cr.minal recklessness should be the verdict of police and coroners. "Safety first." Remove guns from bureau drawers, closets and under pillows. |
