Show Peach Growers Are Warned to Combat Peach Borers Now Peach growers in Utah County should take steps to combat peach tree borers as soon as their Elber-ta Elber-ta peach harvest is completed, advises ad-vises Assistant County Agricultural Agricult-ural Agent Joel C. Barlow. Many growers have already used DDT on the trunks earlier, if so, this treatment treat-ment shouldn't be necessary. Peach tree borers girdle and weaken any stone-fruit tree, including in-cluding peach, prune, plum, apricot apri-cot and cherry trees. This borer tunnels and feeds beneath be-neath the bark near the ground level of the trunk, causing weakened weak-ened and sick trees. Many trees weakened by peach tree borers die within a season or two. Often they become seriously infested with shot hole borers after becoming weakened, weak-ened, the agent points out. Proper use of thylcne dichloride or propylene dichloride emulsion or sprinkling paradichlorobenz e n e (moth ball crystals) around the base of the trees in the fall will give excellent control of this injurious in-jurious pest, Mr. Barlow declares. |
