Show Jolley Speaks to Lions Club on 'Boys and Girls Who Have Problems' at April 4 Meeting B. M. Jolley, head of student counseling of all Junior and Senior High Schools of Alpine District, and in charge of student and pupil personel since 1938, spoke to the Pleasant Grove Lions Club Wednesday evening, April 4th on the subject, "Boys and Girls Who Have Problems". Mr. Jolley said, "The primary cause of such problems is the area of retardation whereby the child does not reach a' required degree nf success, and establishes a bloc or a feeling of Inadequacy on being unable to compete with others. The bloc is brought about by parents or others pushing the child too hard to get him to succeed. He then reverts to other means of attention". atten-tion". He also stated that broken homes is also a big factor in boy and girl problems. The highest rate of delinquency is in the ninth and tenteh grades when the student is at an age when he is expected to stand on his own feet. Mr. Jolley stated that the per cent of delinquent children in the Alpine District is veiy small probably prob-ably less than 1 per cent, and that the average daily attendance of over 10,000 students is 94 per cent. Sickness and other factors make up 5 per cent. There were 262 offences of-fences in nine months from four communities in the district with traffic violations highest with 107. There are four steps followed in order to assist the boy or girl with problems. First the teacher recognizes recog-nizes trouble and tries to assist; failing this the school counselor or principal adjust class schedules; third, home conferences are arranged arran-ged with parents of the child, and the fourth alternative is the Juven- ' ile Court whic his an enforcement agency with unlimited jurisdiction and prescribed penalities. Mr. Jolley stated that a program to help the exceptional child is being started in the Alpine School District. Part of the Lindon School building, after remodeling, will be used to house the exception child. These children usually have abnormal minds, and are physically physi-cally handicapped through birth or disease. Their problems should b accepted by the community with understanding and sympathy. The Lions Club meeting was in charge of the Boys and Girls Committee, with Chairman Kay Jacobs,' asisted by Vemon Ahman, and Sam Jacokson, and was pro-sided pro-sided over by Lion President Neils Fugal. A motion was passed to purchase pur-chase 15 garbage cans to be placed at convenient places in the city to encourage waste-paper deposit, de-posit, rather than litering the streets. The Lions group along with city officials, and the Pleasant Grove Garden Club are supporting the "Litter-Bug Campaign" in the city. |
