Show FSttle Creek Opportunity knocks. Some folks hear it and some folks don't. Some keep the door shut tight. Some leave it ajar a few inches; and others throw it wide open and pull opportunity inside. Last Friday's Deseret News carried car-ried an interesting picture on front page center. It was an engineer's drawing of the proposed $450,000 interchange soon to be constructed in Springville. The new highway structure will connect Highways 91 and 50-89. The latter joint thoroughfare is the road to Maple-ton Maple-ton and Price. C. H. Vance, State Road Commission Com-mission chairman, announced Friday Fri-day that designing of the Springville Spring-ville Interchange is practically complete. Bids will be asked early in November and construction is slated for early this winter, he added. The Springville Interchange is being built, say State Road officials, offic-ials, to eliminate the "serious bottleneck" at the intersections of Highway 91 and Springville's Fourth South Street. This is where traffic turns east for Mapleton and Price. Bottleneck? This writer has driven to Price numerous times in the immediate past and never had to wait longer at this intersection than for a stop light to change. Southbound traffic from Price goes by way of Spanish Fork on Highway High-way 50-6. If memory serves correctly, about a year ago a similar Interchange Inter-change was seriously proposed for the Highway 91-Geneva Road intersection in-tersection here. In this connection, Mr. Vance is quoted thus, "The Pleasant Grove Interchange has been held up until engineers have time to determine the new alignment align-ment of Highway 91 through the Pleasant Grove area." The Pleasant Grove Interchange has been under consideration for at least two years, and perhaps longer. This seems like ample time for even State Road engineers to determine how and where to build it. It would be interesting if one could learn the true facts as to why the Springville project received receiv-ed priority over the one in Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove. Certainly it is not the comparative traffic congestion of the two areas, as anyone can testify testi-fy that travels the two intersections intersec-tions very much, especially during the traffic rush hours. Surely it isn't really more time for the engineers. en-gineers. The Pleasant Grove problem prob-lem could have been solved months ago, if they had put their minds to it. Could it be that folks down Springville way did a little better job of selling than was done in Pleasant Grove? Pressure, political poli-tical or otherwise, coming from somewhere has caused the change in the plans of the State Road Commission, and Springville has gained thereby. Opportunity knocked a year ago in Pleasant Grove. Was the door opened veiy wide? Did many of our citizens invite the visitor in or even say they were glad to see him? Did very many say that he was welcome and very urgently urgent-ly needed? Think it aver friends, before opportunity knocks again. So long 'til Thursday. |
