Show Cover Crops and Nitrogen Needed For Tree Growth Logan, Utah A five year study in Weber County on soil management manage-ment in orchards showed that clean cultivation reduces soil organic or-ganic matter in orchards, pomol-ogists pomol-ogists in the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station report. A cover crop of winter vetch, clovers, alfalfa or small grains is recommended where moisture is available. The studies showed that fertilizers fer-tilizers must be adjusted to individual indiv-idual soil needs but nitrogen and phosphorous should be applied to obtain proper tree growth and maximum yields of desirable commercial com-mercial fruit. Adoption of proper soil management man-agement practices, including use of proper fertilizers, sometimes during the study increased peach yields as much as 150 to 200 bushels an acre. |
