Show Nathaniel West Is Honored On 90th Birthday Nathaniel West, respected pioneer pion-eer of this community observed his 90th birthday anniversary the past week. In honor of the event, his family celebrated on Sunday with a sumptuous chicken dinner at which he was the center figure. Jhe unusual affair was held at the Little Mill Camp in American Fork canyon and 80 of the descendants de-scendants of Mr. and Mrs. West were seated at the long table, with as a centerpiece a beautiful birthday cake. Mr. West was born in Pleasant Grove on August 27, 1861, only 11 years after the first settlement was made here. He received such schooling as was to be had at that early date, He and his wifejosephine Dick-erson Dick-erson West whom he married in Pleasant Grove, and later in the Logan L. D. S. Temple, have enjoyed en-joyed 68 years of married life in this community. Mr. West's early life was spent the usual manner of pioneer boys, farming, road-building and railroading. rail-roading. He helped in the construction of the railroad at Granger, Wyom. ing and the D. & R. G. W. in Castle Valley, Utah. In early manhood, with the late Mark Bezzant, he operated a saw mill in American Fork canyon, and furnished the lumber for many of the homes still standing in this area. When the U. This hazardous feat was accomplished accom-plished by using three sets of steel rails, and building the track as they moved along. When the first culinary water system was installed here, Mr. West contracted the digging of the trenches, again pioneering. Mr. West served for many years as road supervisor of Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove, and was engaged in the threshing machine business, retiring at 80 years of age. He is a member of the L. D. S. Church and is at the present time a High Priest in the ward. He and Mrs.. West are the parents par-ents of nine children: Forest Ranger V. N. West, deceased; de-ceased; David A. West, Attorney in Salt Lake City; General J. Wallace Wal-lace West, Utah National Guard, Salt Lake City; Mrs. A. P. (Gen. eva) Warnick, E. R. West, Teacher Teach-er at Lincoln High School; Bryan F. West, manager Johns Manville Co., Philadelphia, Penn.; Mrs. Vernon (Reva) Ahman, Teacher in elementary education; Vance M. West, farmer and construction engineer. There are 32 grand-child-children and 55 great grand-children. . . i |
