Show BUILD YOUR FUTURE IN UTAH VALLEY When people help one another voluntarily, the whole fabric ' of human society is fortified by a strength that comes from deep in the hearts of men and women of good will. The Red Cross serves as a channel for this strength and good will. Across the nation, hundreds of volunteer helping hands are ready to serve neighbors in time of disaster, dis-aster, to help neighbor's sons and daughters with the problems and emergencies that arise during military mil-itary service, to help keep a life giving stream of blood flowing to civilian hospitals here at homer and to military hospitals in the country and overseas. These helping hands are kept active, and in readiness by the generous support given to the Red Cross by the American people. As always, Utah County will do its part in the progTam for 1953. The Red Cross program is divided div-ided into three universally recognized recog-nized services: First, helping disaster dis-aster victims. It may surprise you to learn that last year seventy cents out of every dollar which the Red Cross expended In disaster cases went to help families get back on their feet again, and last year approximately 33 per cent of its expenditures went for disaster relief. Even here in Utah County, we received more aid from the Red Cross in the spring floods than was collected last year for the Red Cross, from Utah County. The second major service is that of helping serving the armed for ces. This responsibility is not always al-ways fully understood. Suppose we let a serviceman from Korea tell about a part of it in his own words. Corporal R.C.L. from Utah speaking: When they carried me off on a stretcher from the aid station, the first one to come up to see me was a lady with a Red cross crest on her cap. She asked me if there was anything I needed. At the time I didn't need a thing. So she gave me a whole set of toilet articles plus cigarettes, candy can-dy and' stationery. Plus a big friendly American smile. That was worth more than anything else. I could stay up all night telling you the wonderful things the Red Cross is doing here in Korea for the boys. The corporal was speaking a-bout a-bout the Red Cross hospital work- ' er, one of the 400 experienced men and women, including field directors direc-tors and others serving in Korea and Japan to assist our fighting men with emergency needs ' and problems. Red Cross world-wide network of communication links the worker in the field with 3,700 Red Cross1 chapters for interchange inter-change of information and assistance assist-ance to the families as, needed. ' The third major service is that of providing blood for the injured and sick. Last year. 17 month old Bobby Taylor of Ohio, was brought to Children's Medical Center near death with a "disease known as acquired hemolytic anemia. Bobby was pale and thin, and his tiny heart was beating at a dangerous rate as anemia consumed his vital red blood cells faster than his body could manufacture them. Today To-day after 90 blood transfusions, countless doses of cortisone, and removal of his spleen, Bobby, now 22 months old, is almost complete- ly recovered and known to everyone every-one in the hospital as "Fatty." In addition to these three major services, the Red Cross program includes the training of thousands of men and women in first aid, simple nursing skills, and water safety. Through Junior Red Cross and college activities, " the Red Cross draws the youth jf America into its activities, showing them how to help themselves and their young neighbors. Such a program as this surely is worthy of our suppor here in Utah County. It is the aim . of the Red Cross workers of each city in the County to make a house to house canvas to accept your contributions. con-tributions. If you happen to be away from home and are missed, remember' that the drive continues contin-ues all through the month of Mar. Contact your local chairman and offer him your contribution. None of us know when disaster may strike us. Remember that all those whose donations swell the 1953 fund are(the actors in a never ending end-ing pageant of mercy. |
