Show Baffle Creek! Breeze K. B. Las Vegas, Nevada With the election safely over, a blissful silence sil-ence has descended over the land. It seems welcome indeed after all th tub-thumping we have been enforced en-forced to endure these many months. With the silence should come m time for a little serious contemplation contem-plation on the part of all the winners, the losers, lo-sers, and the rest of us, who were merely in-j in-j nocent bystanders bystan-ders during the political melee. The election itself, contrary to the claims of VK'O01MMOaM4UU4MM4K-. MM O tactions, has not solved anything. Elections never solve anything. The same problems perplex us still. Perhaps the greatest value that has come from the campaign and the resulting election has been to make us more fully aware of the problems that still remain to be solved. To the winners, an intelligent solution of these problems is of primary importance. Petty jcal- ousies and partisan feuds should be forgotten in an honest effort to serve the country honestly and diligently. The chief .role of the losers is to constantly remind the winners of their campaign promises, and to offer constructive criticism throughout the ensuimj four years. The great challenge fbr the rest of us lies in the kind of life we live in the months to come. In the main, our public servants behave be-have about as we demand. When they become corrupt in practice or lax in the duties of their office, tt is usually due to pressure of evil designing minorities, or of the total indifference of the masses of the electorate. j To live in a democracy such as ours is a wonderful heritage; but this blessing entails a solemn responsibility. re-sponsibility. In a dictatorship, the dictator does the thinking, the planning, and the execution of the plans. The plan of action adopted in a true democracy should be the result re-sult of the composite thinking of all. In order to think constructively, constructive-ly, one must first be well informed, inform-ed, and second have the courage of his convictions. On this fact hangs the success or failure of the next administration. So long 'til Friday. |
