'- : 1 ' "J : FROM DETROIT headquarters, headquar-ters, thousands of entry blanks and rule books were being mailed out this week to contestants contest-ants in the General Motors Better Bet-ter Highways Awards Contest. The contest is the largest of its kind ever attempted and GM is offering 162 prizes, totaling $194,-000 $194,-000 for the best essays on the subject, "How to Plan' and Pay lor the Safe and Adequate Roads We Need." Open to every man and woman in the United States, the contest offers a first national award of $25,000; second place nationally, $10,000; third place, $5,000; and three national honorable mentions men-tions of $3,000 each. In addition; there will be nine separate regional re-gional awards of $2,500 each. Finally, first place winners in each of the 48 states plus the Dis- 1 trict of Columbia will receive ! $1,500 each. Two honorable men- tion awards for each state and i the District of Columbia will be $500 each, a total of 98 state 1 honorable mentions. j GM is sponsoring the essay ! writing contest, which closes on ; March 1, 1953, in an effort to stimulate "more nation-wide j flunking, discussion and understanding under-standing of the facts of our current cur-rent highways requirements." Entry blanks, rule books and Mut'lher information about the contest may be obtained at any GM passenger car or truck dealer in the U.
