Show Vikings Pre-Season Hoop Opener Is At Payson Nov. 28 PeeGee, the home of "red-hot" hoop fans, will not see the 1952 edition of the Vikings when preseason, pre-season, games - start hereabouts; but then horse and buggy days are over and they can transport themselves to Payson on the night of Nov. 28 to see Coach Bill Smith's young, but eager charges. Bill has cut his squad down to 11 men six seniors and five juniors, jun-iors, who are showing progress with each night of practice. Coach Smith is of the belief that his team will be quite an improvement improve-ment over last year's cellar-dwelling outfit. "This year we have far greater depth than a year ago. Our forwards for-wards last season couldn't seem to score they averaged only five points per game. But I've got a better scoring punch with Vance West on the forward line," Bill allowed. Coming back to the game with Payson, Bill said the Lions have most of their team back from last year. Merlin Swenson was the only man on this year's Viking squad who saw much action last year. Pleasant Grove beat the Lions on the local floor and hope to repeat at Payson. But that, again, will depend on bringing a scoring punch into action. The first game of the season here will be against Union High of Roosevelt. Union represented that division at the tourney a year ago and the Basin Boys should providea lot of basketball. The game will be played Dec. 6. Coach Smith said that there are some "attitude" problems to iron out before the season starts, the most pressing being that of diligent dili-gent training. Seniors who are out trying to make the grade are Harold Jack-lin, Jack-lin, center; Merlin Swenson guard; Sterling Walker, guard; Dean Wilkinson, forward; Kayle Kirk, forward; Arlyn Deveraux, forward. for-ward. Only Swenson and Kirk were semi-regulars .last year. Juniors are Vance West, forward; for-ward; Carl Crawford, forward; Garry Carson forward; Dave Richards, Rich-ards, guard, Ronald Robinson, guard. Bill said that West will definitely defin-itely make the main five, and that Crawford and Richards have a chance of breaking in for a lot of action. |
