Show Alpine District Shows i Ten Percent Increase In Students For Year j . Alpine School district has already made practically a ten percent gain over Its 1941-42 enrollment, It was disclosed this week when all census figures were tabulated at the district office In American Fork. A total school population of 5,745 was shown as against 5,239 for last year. The tabulation Is broken Into four units, Lent, Pleasant Grove, Lincoln and American Fork and the number oT boys and girls of the district shown. The tabulated count follows: 1941-43 1942-43 Lehi 985 1,104 Lincoln 1,761 1,853 Pleasant Grove 1,122 1,284 American Fork 1,371 1,504 TOTAL 5,239 5,745 Total boys 2,944. Total girls 2,801. A check of the .above figures gives practically a ten percent Increase for the whole district. Pleasant Grove leads the other three sections "with an increase of 162 pupils or 14 percent. Lehi shows 119 extra students, a 12 percent increase; American Fork 133 more or 9 percent increase and Lincoln has 92 more students, nearly a six percent increase. in-crease. Another interesting fact in the figures is that the district still has more boys in school than girls. There are 2,944 boys and 2,801 girls of school age tabulated. There are but 11 students, 4 hoys and 7 girls, between the ages of .10 and 17 years, living in the entire en-tire district who cannot read or write. This ten percent increase in school population in the face of the extreme shortage of living accommodations accom-modations is ample assurance that our section of Utah county is going to grow tremendously as a result of the new steel industry coming to this section. It is generally conceded con-ceded that had we been able to furnish housing for the people desiring de-siring to locate in this section the Increase would have been at least double what we have for the construction con-struction period of the nlant. The government experts have figured that our population will double the original figure as a result of the Industrial expansion coming to this section. The present school population has been handled with little trouble and :school officials leel that they can get thru the year without much inconvenience except the over crowding of classes In practically every room. The addition of a 'few extra teachers, instalation of extra class room seats and an extra class Toom, where they have been available, avail-able, have thus far met the problem of educating the entire influx of students. stu-dents. No new building has been possible and the situation has just had to be met this way. What is to come another year no one dares try to predict but further increases will make additional class room necessary. This will be met in some way but at present no one is able to say just how. |
