Show Honored Citizen Called by Death William L. Hayes, 69, one of the most prominent and best loved of our towns people passed away at his home in Pleasant Grove, Tuesday, July 10th, at 6:00 o'clock p. m. Ai slight cold, rapidly developing into pneumonia, caused his death after a ' ; brief illness. He was born at Lehi, ' ' January 19, 1865. the son of John J. and Eleanor Wagstaff Hayes. Since childhood he has lived in Pleasant Grove. He began school with Augusta Winters Grant as his teacher. He attended the Brigham Young academy from 1881 to 1883. receiving his instructions from such men as Karl G. Maeser, James E. Talmadge and James M. Tanner. Whra 23 years of age he was married mar-ried to Margaret Brown, who died two years later, leaving him one daughter. In November, 1891, he married Harriet Richards, who died Mav, 1925. leaving four children. Lois Haves West, Emmett R., Margaret Mar-garet May and Spencer W. W. L. Hayes has been an active church worker. He filled a mission to the Southern States from 1891 to 1893 and for thirty-two years acted as an officer in the Sunday Schools of Pleasant Grove. He served in the presidency of the 44th quorum of seventies for ten years and was bishop's counsellor for nine years. He was chairman of the Stake Old Folks committee for twenty years and of the genealogical committee for five years. At the time of his death he was serving in the presidency presi-dency of the Stake High Priest's auorum. He participated in many funerals having spoken at more than 300. In business and civic affairs he 'has been equally active. For 45 years he was engaged in general merchandising. He was active in : politics, serving for many years as local and county chairman of the ! Republican party, and was a representative rep-resentative in the State Legislature during the time William Spry was governor. He introduced the bill which -provided for liquor control urd'-r th l--cal option plan. His passing concludes a life of one of Plearant Grove's beloved and highly esteemed citizens, and he will be especially remembered for his kindness and sympathy to the sick and those in trouble. He is survived hy his wife, Katie Mayer Monsrm. Hayes; three daughters, daugh-ters, Vervene H. Pingree, of Salt Lake City, Lois H. "West and Mar- garet May of Pleasant Grove, and, two sons, Emmett R., and Spencer W.
