We have assembled to pay our tributes of love and affection to our dead, and now let us pause here long enough to draw to your attention this Memorial, which has been presented by American Ameri-can Fork City in respect and esteem of the war veterans of this city, who have answered their country's call in times of war. This monument or memorial has been designed and completed by local workman, and stands a credit to their workmanship. The bronze tablet tab-let carries 57 names of war veterans result of skilled workmanship. The bronze tablet has upon it the names of 57 wai- veterans, who have passed on. The standard on the right is for Old Glory, the flag for which they have stood and fought. The other standard bears the flag an'd emblem , it the American Legion. Fellow Citizens, we want you to feel that we feel this is a fitting emblem and depicts the esteem in which this city holds its veterans of war. May it ever stand as steadfast as the eternal hills which surround us. May it remind you of the sacrifices as well as our triumphs in war. May it have a spiritual influence upon those who visited here that, that most terrible terri-ble of all disasters War among humanity hu-manity may never be known to future fu-ture generations. Every citizen of the community should be proud of the stand erected, and as time rolls on and other names are ad'ded to the memory list on the tablet, its sacredness will be increased. increas-ed. The sponsorers, the American Legion and Service Star Legion, and the doners, American Fork City, shall never be forgotten for this appropriate appropri-ate memorial tribute. The stand is located at the head of the cemetery, an'd is approximately 10 who have seen service in the Civil, Black Hawk, Spanish-American and World Wars, also the names of three who served in Johnson's Army, and whose remains lie buried in this cemetery. We have tried to have this, memorial lust a little different than anything that has been erected thus far in honor of War Veterans. Some cities have erected the statue of a "dough-hoy", "dough-hoy", others have planted trees and parks, but we trust our choice in this matter will meet with your approval -and prove satisfactory to all. It was the Service Star mothers and officers of the American Legion Post of this city that waited upon the city council and made a request that something of this nature be erected in honor of the war veterans. Tho city council saw fit to grant their request and a sum of $500.00 was set aside tor this purpose. Neither of the organizations mentioned desired to assume the responsibility of maintaining main-taining this Memorial, therefore, it as Heslred that this responsibility should remain with the city, and that 'W0.0O additional be appropriated for "to Planting of trees and for per- by 10 feet. A cement walk and contemplated lawn will complete i the erection. The sponsorers of this project were 'the American Legion and Service ' Star Legion, who asked the I citv about two months ago to make i I this presentation. The petition was approved and Axel Bloomquist was aske'd to draw appropriate plans for the stand. At a later date these were presented to the city officers who immediately announced bids for the construction work. .Tared Kellar was granted this and he should be given special mention for the splendid result re-sult of his workmanship. S. T. Shelley, purchasing agent for the city, secured the services of the Salt Lake Stamp Co. to prepare plans j for the tablet. These were submitted on a paper drawing to a committee composed of Mayor Greenwood, Purchasing Pur-chasing Agent Shelley, Commander in Chief J. J. Mercer and Morlcy Steele, chairman of the Cemetery committee, who accepted them and placed the order. Mr. Sliellcy, who was responsible respon-sible for the wording of the tablet, j made several trips to the city to in- J sure no errors on the finished pro-j duct, and to see tbat the work was done in a thorough manner. He should be highly congratulated for the correctness and splendid construction con-struction of the tablet's wording. Another feature of the Memorinl j Day's services was under the direc- j tion of the Service Star Legion. They placed over 60 flags at the graves of war veterans and World War mothers. moth-ers. They also presented a beautiful floral wreath to the veterans Memorial Memo-rial stand, which was placed over the head of the tablet. |
