Show Lest We Forget! Memorial , Day Next Thurs., May 30 On Memorial Day, next Thursday, May 30, flowers and flags will cover the graves of men who died for America. Amer-ica. Wherever these men lie, the cemeteries at home or in the fields of the dead overseas, flowers and flags will be placed by reverent hands on the sod beneath which they rest. A decade ago there were no wreaths or garlands heaped on the graves in France and Belgium. Raw mounds of earth these graves were then, marked by hurriedly mada crosses of wood. The columns ot men moving past them into battle had no time to place floral tributes. The business of dearth and destruction destruc-tion was still going on and man had scant time even to bury those who fell. But nature, great and kindly, cared for those who were returned to the earth's breast. Around and over the graves in the shell-churned soil appeared ap-peared little blooms of red, looking like drops of heroes' blood. They were wild poppies sprinkled by nature na-ture above the graves which man wa too engaged: to tend. Nature mada the poppy the heroes' flower. Today the poppies of France and Flanders will be brought to American. Fork where they will be sold. Every penny which Is contributed will go to tbe relief of the disabled, their families and the families of the dead. Thus the poppy fills a double mission, honoring the dead and serving th living. . jEvery citizen of this city should have one of the little red flowers on his lapel today.
