Show Hatchery Business Being Developed In District The Adams Hatchery, being operated op-erated by Dan E. Adams and three sons, at Manila, is fast developing into a real industry for this section and promises to become an asset, not only to this district, but to the entire en-tire state. The policy 'adopted by the operators of producing only certified chicks under state supervision super-vision promises the hatchery success and guarantees poultrymen a grade of chick which will improve the industry in-dustry and step up the returns of the poultryman. The new 58,000 egg Smith Electric Incubator replaced a smaller unit in the fall of 1934 at the Adams place. The first setting was made January 1, 1935, and the unit has been run at practically capacity since and will continue until May 15th on chicks. Some 100,000 baby chicks and 6,000 turkeys will have been hatched by the closing date of the spring run which is now set at June 1st. Hatches Hatch-es come off twice weekly. The entire output of the plant has been sold for the season and a bigger and better program is already al-ready being maped to take care of the 1936 season. This year the operators used only two-year-old hens for hatching eggs and imported cokerels from hens producing 300 to 333 eggs per year. The 100 cockerels used this year were secured at a cost of $1,000. Further importations of cockerels from the best known White Leghorn breeder in the United States is being made for the 1936 season, Mr. Adams announced. It is most gratifying to see the thatching industry developed to a greater degree in this section and our state and the Adams company is to be congratulated and given support sup-port in the efforts of its operators to get into this business on a large scale. The industry keeps thousands of dollars in the district which formerly former-ly went out for chicks, besides furnishing fur-nishing employment and additional money to producers for eggs used in setting. |
