Show Gleaner-M Men Banquet Success Two hundred twenty three Gleaner Girls and M Men of the Alpina stake together with a number of special guests attended the annual banquet held Thursday night, March 22nd, in the amusement hall of the stake tabernacle. It was a festive occasion and the large room filled with long tables surrounded by the young womanhood wo-manhood and manhood of the stake presented an inspiring sigl t. Eldred Nicholes, of the Second wixd, president presi-dent of the stake M Men's organization, organiza-tion, presided over the banquet as master of ceremony and following brief greetings to the group, asked former stake president S. L. Chip-man Chip-man to offer the invocation and blessings upon the food. Mr. Nicholes Nich-oles ithen introduced Rex Ingersoll of the Fourth ward M Men as the toastmaster, which position he creditably credi-tably filled. While the food was being served a number of pleasing selections were played toy a string ensemble comprised com-prised of Miss Betha Storrs, Miss Lydia Olsen, Miss Helen Johnston and Ferren Sager. Two original and very splendid toasts were given, one "To the Gleaner Girls" by Sanford Bingham of the First ward and the response, "To the M Men" by Miss Zelda Larsen Lar-sen of the Highland ward. President Clifford E. Young spoke briefly, expressing ex-pressing his pleasure at being invited to meet with the young people of the stake on this occasion, The speaker of the evening, Dr. Adam S. Bennion of Salt Lake City, was given undivided attention when he addressed the group. The keynote key-note of his message was in keeping with the M Men-Gleaner joint study of "Personality" and the topic was well suited to the speaker whose every word and action bespeaks that quality of character. Dr. Bennion took as his topic "The Eyes Have It" and stressed the three , "eyes", first, the Eye of Intelligence; second, the Eye of Initiative and third, the Eye of Integrity. "Find something you like to do, and do it so well that someone will ask you to join their force", was the advice he gave, when speaking of the secret of success in this world. He illustrated his points with a number of personal experiences in contacting various individuals in his work. Leo Nelson, stake M Men leader, presented to the Alpine ward M Men's basketball team two banners, one an award from the Desert News for the team winning the district championship last year and the other a pennant from the Alpine stake in recognition of the team's taking the stake championship this year. George Clark, Alpine ward Y. M. M. I. A. superintendent accepted the pennants in behalf of the team. The hall and tables were prettily decorated for the occasion, in Easter colors of green, gold and white. The lights were covered with Easter lily shades and the places at the tables were marked with miniature pond lilies. Potted plants also decorated the tables. The music stand was enclosed in a lattice effect of green and gold. The banquet was prepared by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Robinson and was served by a number of Junior girls of the M. I. A. Among the guests invited were the stake presidency, the ward bishoprics, bishop-rics, the stake and ward Y. M. M. I. A. and Y. L. M. I. A. executive officers, offi-cers, the members of the M. I. A. stake board and the M Men and Gleaner class leaders of the stake, with their partners. Leo Nelson, stake M Men leader, and Mrs. Mabel Nelson, stake Gleaner leader, with Clyde Crookston and Eldred Nicholes, Nich-oles, were directly in charge of the committees, and were a-ssisted by a splendid corps of committee people from the stake and ward organiza- tions, all of whom are to be commended com-mended for the splendid success of the affair. Dancing followed the banquet and program, the music being furnished by The Americans. n |
