Show CANADA TAKES KING AND QUEEN TO ITS HEART, SAYS SPECTATOR TO ROYAL ENTRY Of special interest at the present time in the Dominion of Canada is the visit of their majesties, King Georgle VI and Queen Elizabeth, who arrived in Canada on May 17, to make a tour of North America which would extend from coast to coast. They are the first ruling sovereigns to set foot on Canadian soil: The tumultuous ovation that has rung from one coast to the other tells a story of the loyalty and love of the Canadian people for their rulers. Probably never before have such preparations been made for any event such as have been carried forward at this time. The whole of Canada has taken on a new brilliance bril-liance streets of the cities are bedecked be-decked with flags and pennants and streamers. In the city of Toronto, preparations prepara-tions had been going forward for months. On the morning of May 22, the whole city had taken on an air that would only by typical of a peace-loving people who were ready to do honor to the heads of their great democracy. The royal train was to arrive at the North Toronto station sta-tion at 10:30 a. m.; from there a 28-mile course was laid out for the royal party to travel, the program calling for an entire day to do this. Stops were to be made at various points of interest such as City Hall, where the formal welcome was given; giv-en; Parliament buildings, where distinguished dis-tinguished guests were to be presented; pre-sented; and the Veterans hospital. Crowds began to gather 12 hours before the scheduled arrival. These early arrivals stood throughout the night, in drilling rain, so that they might catch a glimpse of their King and Queen. With the breaking of dawn, the whole city were out awaiting their arrival with anticipation. As the royal train arrived at the station, a mighty roar burst from the throats of the multitudes, and it did not die down for eight hours, as their majesties majes-ties visited the Queen City of Canada. Can-ada. This delightful pair captivated capti-vated the hearts of all with whom they came in contact, or by those who in any way caught a fleeting glimpse of them as they rode by. The sterling character they possess is evidenced at the first glance; it stands out so profoundly. The Queen's beauty and gracious smile, as well as her congeniality, hold a spot in the hearts of all who have seen her. The sentiments of all Canada was expressed by one veteran who had been wounded in the war, causing him to spend the rest of his life in the veterans' hospital. When the Queen shook hands with him and thanked him for what he had done for his country, he finally was able to choke the following words from the depths of his soul, which had been touched by these wonderful people; "Great God, aren't they worth fighting and dying for?" And so all the North American continent joins with the British Empire Em-pire in saying: "God Save Our King and Queen." R. G. GARDNER. |
