Show Select High Quality Seed The value of good, clean, productive produc-tive seed cannot be over estimated, says J. C. w Hogenson, extension agronomist'ef the Utah State Agri-j cultural College. Good seed is viable I and hence will grow and produce a plant. Some seeds that farmers plant; have a germinating of only from 60 to 75 per cent. That means that; only from 60 to 75 out of every hundred seeds will grow. That kind of seed is not good seed. Good seed . should have a germination of from yo to iuu per cent. Clean seed is free from both plant diseases and weed seed. Plant disease di-sease spores may be killled by treating treat-ing the seed before planting, while most weed seeds may be removed by proper fanning of the seed grain. Productive seed has a pedigree. It is seed with a record behind it and that is adapted to the land and climate. cli-mate. In other words, it is certifi'.-f''. seed, such as is grown by conscientious conscient-ious seed-minded farmers, or seed-improvement seed-improvement -associations. It is really surprising the number of weed seeds that are ordinarily sown with seed grain, observes Mr. Hogenson. Very often as many as 10.000 weeds are sown with every j bushel of seed grain, and still many; farmers wonder how these bad j weeds ever got a start on their farm. Plant weed-free, disease-free seed' for best results, and at the same! time keep your farm clean and free' from these pests, advises Mr. Hogen- |
