Show High School News By "Doc" Linebaugh PUELIC SPEAKING CONTEST AT WEBER JR. COLLEGE Four students, Dan Smith, Alfred Dexter, Jennie Hone and Kayle Linebaugh, Line-baugh, accompanied by Miss Estelle Fenton, debating coach, represented the high school at the second annual public speaking contest held at Weber Web-er Jr. College February 15th and 16th. The debating team consisting of Alfred and Dan progressed to the fifth round before being eliminated. Jennie Hone placed fourth in the orational contest, Kayle Linebaugh placed third in the extemporaneous speaking contest. The trip was very interesting and students gained some valuable knowledge from it. Basketball Lauritz Peterson, the Viking's dependable de-pendable guard, and divisional scoring scor-ing leader, won the Pleasant Grove-American Grove-American Fork game here Friday night by a successful free-throw. The game was nip and tuck throughout. The score the' first quarter was 5 to 9 for P. G. 13 to 12 at the half for P. G. 16 to 15 at the third quarter, but during the final quarter A. F. jumped up to tie the score at 18 to 18 and with one minute min-ute to go Peterson's chance for a foul was successful, thus putting the Vikings in the lead one point. A. F. had two foul pitches after this but neither was made so the score stood 19-18 as the game ended. Peterson and Warburton were high scorers for the winners while Deavitt and Kirk-patrick Kirk-patrick were outstanding for the Cavemen. Provo Trounces P. G. Provo, led by Vern Peterson, a very clever guard, defeated the Vikings cn the latter's home floor Monday night by -a score of 37-24. Lauritz Peterson and LaVerl Warburton were outstanding for P. G. and Vern Peterson Pet-erson and Daniels led the scorers with totals of 16 and 7 respectively. The floor work of Smith and Gourley was outstanding for P. G. Civic Clashes to Visit State Capitol The Junior and Sophomore students stud-ents enrolled in Civics classes will visit the House of Representatives and Senate at the state capitol Monday, Mon-day, February 25th. The trip will also consist of visits to the state penitentuary, K-S-L studio, Glades candy factory and maybe the University Uni-versity of Utah. Approximately seventy-five students will make this trip. |
