Show Epithet Now Praise One of the epithets hurled at Washington during the early days of its development as the national capital cap-ital has since come to be an expression ex-pression of praise. Opponents of the District of Columbia location termed Washington "The City of Magnificent Distances." This cognomen, cog-nomen, originally uttered in sarcasm, sar-casm, has since come to describe Uie long, straight and beauLiful streets of the city. Other names indicative of the attitude of the coiners included such unlovely slogans slo-gans as "Capital of Miserable Huts," "The Wilderness City" and "City of Streets Without Houses " The bcuties of the capital have developed de-veloped to confound these early criticisms. |
