Show Modern Civic Building Is Notable Contribution To Pleasant Grove's Progress The Mayor and City Council welcome wel-come this opportunity to give a brief report of the year's activities and to wish everyone a joyous Christmas and prosperous coming year. The outstanding project of the year now nearing completion is the new Civic Building. The city will now have a beautiful and commodi-our commodi-our home that will provide long needed services to the public. Most appreciated of all will be the fine new library. Its utility will depend largely large-ly upon the cooperation of the public pub-lic in helping to provide books and magazines. The fire department will be given deserving headquarters including kitchen and dining hall. These quarters will also be open to general public use. The city council room, waiting room, offices for police, po-lice, city treasurer and recorder have been designed to give the maximum of service to officers and taxpayers. The city jail meets all state requirements require-ments as to sanitation and safety. Its thick walls and steel cages offers little comfort to the wrongdoer. We hope it will be the least used part of the new building. The W. P. A. project on street, sidewalk, culvert, and cement ditch extensions and improvements have been continued during the year. A continuation of this work will be set up for the coming year so that all the important ditches, bridges, and needed sidewalks have been improved improv-ed or built. A new project has been outlined to renovate the old library building. build-ing. This will include preparing the library room for use as a museum and assembly hall for use of the daughters and sons of the pioneers also for general public meetings. The rest of the building will be altered al-tered to provide a garage and shelter for our road equipment also a work shop for our water department. Projects to cement and improve the grounds about the new city building, also to make some needed extensions and improvements in our water-works system are now being prepared. It is also the plan of the city in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce and Lion's club to sponsor spon-sor the building of a swimming pool. This in connection with the lighted park and pioneer park will provide the city with an adequate center for regulated summer recreation. At the present time the city, and service clubs have cooperated to build a commodious skating pond on the Central school grounds. The coming of cold weather will make possible a place where the young people may enjoy winter sports under un-der proper and safe conditions. It has been possible for the city to continue and set up the extensive W. P. A. projects because of the very large proportion of the sponsor's contribution made possible through use of our city road equipment. We have been able to employ practically all our citizens on the W. P. A. rolls within the city and so distribute here a payroll amounting to more than $5000 per month. As the present city administration comes to a close, the Mayor and Council wish to thank all who have been so helpful in carrying out the many responsibilities of the city government. We appreciate the fine cooperation we have had. Pleasant Grove City together with church, and service clubs have pledged support of the state-wide beautification program. This involves in-volves the removal of old fences, unsightly buildings, planting of trees, landscaping, and a campaign to keep the weeds off the streets and sidewalks. Let us remember the slogan: "Pleasant Grove A Better Place To Live" and all unite to make it such. S. A. Kirk, Mayor |
