Show Local Canning Co. Maintained Operation In spite of the adverse conditions the country over during 1933 the Pleasant Grove Canning company operated the past season being one of the few plants in the state to do so. They handled some fruits vegetables vege-tables and the tomato crop of the entire county and maintained one of the largest payrolls for the fall 'season 'sea-son in the whole county. The past year has been a very small one for the Canning Company as business conditions did not look very promising in the spring and the Company was reluctant to take a big acreage of tomatoes or beans due to business conditions generally. In this attitude they were in line with all of the canners over the country as every Canning Company curtailed their pack very much the past year. The Pleasant Grove Canning Company operated only one factory at Orem. They handled a good many carloads of cold pack strawberries, straw-berries, all of which were sold and settled for in August. The cherry crop was small and the price was j very low" on canned cherries so that the Canning Company did not make a big effort to can a lot this year. In fact there were not a lot of cherries to be gotten. Half the cherries that were packed are stiU unsold 'as the market has not been very good for canned fruits thus far. But a small acreage of tomatoes was contracted and the season was very late so that packing did not commence until about the fifth of September in any volume. After that time thefactory was able to fill orders with the Campbell Soup company and to pack a fan-quantity fan-quantity of tomatoes, about half of which are sold but on which deliveries deliv-eries have not yet been made. The outlook is rather confusing at this time as business conditions are quite uncertain and buying power is slow so there is not a big demand for any canned products. The company expects ex-pects tb oe able to sell all of the tomatoes that are on hand without difficulty, however, between now and the first of June, Next year this company anticipate a much larger production and at this time contemplate operating both factories the coming season, it is reported. During the past year payrolls during dur-ing the canning season have amounted to $15,000.00 per month. This means a lot in the community and we hope the coming season will make it possible for them to operate their factories for a number of months. During the past year the .company met the request of the Government to increase prices to farmers, an increase in-crease on the price of U. S. No. 1 tomatoes was made from $9.50 to $11.87 per ton. This action was taken voluntarily by the board of directors. Numerous improvements were made in the factory the past year and this concern is now in a position' posi-tion' to go ahead on -as large or larger scale than before. " |
