Show Review - Wednesday, October 11, 1989 - Page 9 Girls volleyball season is having its ups and downs The girl's volleyball teams at the high school had a combination of wins and losses this week. They beat American Fork and lost their matches to Mt. View. On Tuesday, the varsity team beat American Fork, 15-- 8 and 15-1- The kids worked hard on their passing and hitting, and played with real confidence. Several of the players on the team pushed them-selves hard, and kept the lead throughout the match. In their match against Mt. View, the same P.G. team didn't seem to be on the floor. They really struggled in their first game, losing In their second game, they rallied, and intimidated Mt. View, and won, 15-1- In the third game, however, they couldn't come back, and lost C- - 15. The J.V. team started slowly, losing their first match, 10-1- In the next two games of the match, however, P.G. really ran past A.F. 15-- 4 and 15-- The serving and passing was very good from P.G. The team really came together, and played well as a team. The match against Mt. View was a washout for P.G., with them losing in two games, 5 and The sophomore team had a close first game against A.F., barely pulling ahead, 15-1- In their sec- - ond game. P.G. totally dominated, 15-- In their match against Mt. From the varsity football team, MattBulkley was picked. From the Jomore team, Gary Sanderson "is chosen by Coach Hill. Varsity Jeyball player Hillary West was hosen, with Laurie Walker picked J.V. and Mindy Beagley from je sophomore squad. From the cross country team, Mark Wright and Scott Johnson were selected by Coach Owens. Matt played solidly both in of-fense and defense. He plays offen-sive guard and defensive end. Coach Henry said that despite the loss to Provo, he "Weathered the storm." Coach Hill said that Gary worked very hard in their game last week, and was very strong in both offense and defense. Coach Bone congratulated Hi-lary saying that Hillary played very strong front row against their op-ponents this past week. She said that she also had some great pass-ing in the back row, also. Laurie Walker played some excellent volleyball in their matches at the tournament at Rich last Friday. Coach Dahl said that she, "really played out of her head." She said she was strong both in the back row and in her hitting and blocking. Mindy is really coming along as a setter, observed Coach Phelon. She said that her serving has been strong this season, and she is coming along in seve-- al areas as a new player. Mark Wright, who is in ninth grade, is really running well this year, running between third and fourth position on the varsity squad. Coach Owens said that he has a very bright future as a runner. Scott Johnson, a junior, is run-ning in fifth position on the varsity squad. He is a hard worker and a good kid to coach. This is his second year on the varsity squad. AH of these athletes will be given a Mama Bear sundae from Beary Best. Again, we would like to thank Beary Best for their continuing support. Men's 3-o- n-3 basketball games are exciting local entertainment The men's 3 on 3 basketball league through Pleasant Grove Recreation is well underway at the Community Center. There are 16 teams in all and the competition level is such that the league can be divided into an upper and lower division for the tournament play. The regular league season will end the night of Thursday, Nov. 2. Tournament play will be for four nights, from Nov. 7 through 16. Andy Anderson, league direc-tor, invites the community to come down on Tuesday and Thursdays for some fast entertainment and exciting action. Games are played at 6:30, 7:30, 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. Andy said that the players have some great moves, and there is no admission price.
