Chip sealing is undertaken on many roads, generally with low to moderate traffic volumes, about every five years. ' It involves spraying liquid asphalt on the highway surface then spreading and rolling aggregate or small gravel chips into the asphalt material, afterwhich the excess chips are swept off. The asphalt seals the highway surface to inhibit air and moisture deterioration and helps extend the life of the highway, and the chips provide a skid-resistant finish. This comparatively low-cost preventive maintenance helps avert a more extensive and costly resurfacing project., , . This work .-.will ' necessitate restricting traffic to only one lane and a pilot car will be used to guide the one-way traffic past the paving zone. Motorists may experience delays of up to 20 minutes. Work on the project will begin in the near future, although a definite date has not been established. The . contract stipulates that work must be completed by June VS. Funding for this project will come from UDOT's maintenance budget. |
