These prostaglandins sensitize certain receptors in the body to pain. Blood concentrations of prostaglandins have been found to decrease when the NSAIDs are administered. Some researchers have found that as high as 90 percent of the women studied reported a reduction in menstrual cramps when properly treated with one of the NSAIDs. The generic names for some of the commonly used NSAIDs are ibuprofen, naproxen and mefenamic acid. These drugs are also often used for other conditions such as headache and rheumatoid arthritis. Som etimes the dose required for the symptoms of dysmenorrhea is higher than the dose needed in other situations. |
