Show BYU to present LDS play written by P.G. native V J Susan Howe's play, "Burdens of Earth," will be presented in the Pardoe Theater at BYU, beginning Thursday, May 28, and continuing through Friday and Saturday, June 2 through 6, and June 9 through 13 at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee June 8 at 4 p.m. Susan, daughter of Elliot and Maralyne Howe, Pleasant Grove, will attend the opening night of her play. She is now a graduate student working on a doctoral program in English and Creative Writing at the University of Denver. Her play is about the trials endured by Joseph Smith when he and four of his companions were encarcerated in the Liberty Jail during the winter of 1838-39. The Saints had been driven out of Missouri. Oliver Cowdery and several members of the Quorum of the Twelve had apostatized. The Church of Jesus Christ was facing serious difficulties without the help of its leader. Susan has depicted the struggle, sorrow and anguish of Joseph Smith in this very dark hour of his life. From these severe trials came light, Susan Howe knowledge, inspiration and power through Joseph Smith. Susan was raised in Pleasant Grove where she attended Grovecrest, Pleasant Grove Junior High and Pleasant Grove High School. |
