Show NBICU nurse wins UVRMC Extra Miler Award for idea Simply by accident an unordered package of med-surg supplies arrived in Utah Valley Regional Medical Center's Newborn Intensive In-tensive Care that combined two things the unit had been ordering separately. That's when Terry Gardner, R.N., began wondering if the combined package might actually be cheaper than getting the two procedures separately. And because he was right, Gardner is a winner in the Extra Miler contest, which was started to promote ideas among employees that will ultimately help the facility and patients save money and get better service. "I just asked the floor manager to look into it and see if by ordering what we'd gotten by accident we'd save money," Gardner said. "And as it turned out we would be saving quite a bit in the long run." Gardner, who is originally from Washington state, has been at UVRMC for approximately 14 years. He began at UVRMC as an orderly and then received his LPN from Utah Technical College. Gardner then went on to. get his. bachelors in nursing from Westminister West-minister College in Salt Lake City. Gardner has been in HBICU since 1982. Gardner and his wife, Marty, live in Pleasant Grove with their five children. He enjoys hunting, fishing and photography in his spare time. In terms of saving money for his department, Gardner says he believes it's every employee's responsiblity to be looking out for such things because in the long run they are not only benefitting the institution, but also themselves and the patient. |
