Battle Creek DUP hears history On Monday, Nov. 10, the Battle J Creek Camp of the DUP met in the ! garden room of the City Recreation Building, where they were welcomed by Colleen Gardiner. A prayer was given by Mabel Gardiner, the Pledge of Allegiance was given and a song, "Come, Come Yet Saints" was sung, ac-I companied by secretary Mildred Sutch. Visitors introduced were Mildred Smith, Donna W. Wall and Lucille Faddis. A history was given by Dora Bowers Christiansen. She was born in Oakville, Sanpete County, the tenth child among the 11 children born to her parents. For the first 12 I years of her childhood her father's work took him away from home most of the time, so it was her mother's responsibility to care for her children. She did a wonderful s; job of making a happy, productive Garth Christiansen. After he returned home from serving in World War II, they lived for a while in Salt Lake City, then came to Pleasant Grove where they settled down and raised a fine family of three boys and four girls. Garth passed away in 1985. A lesson was given by Gertrude Richards, assisted by Colleen Gardiner, on early English im-migrants. During a time in Nauvoo when there was great depression and apostatizing, a group of seven missionaries, headed by Heber C. Kimball, a faithful friend to the prophet Joseph Smith, sailed on the ship "Gerrick." They landed in Liverpool and went to Preston where they eventually established a branch of the church. Dan Jones from Wales was college-educate- d where he was prepared for the ministry. He was also a sea captain and brought many immigrants from England to Nauvoo, where he learned about Joseph Smith, was baptized and became a close friend of the prophet. He returned to Wales several times, where he became a very successful missionary. By 1847 there were 2000 converts. Dan Jones not only converted members to the church, but brought them to America and crossed the plains with them. He explored southern Utah. He married Jane Melling and they had 10 children, raising only two. He died in provo at the age of 51. He contended mightily for the Lord. Hostesses Gloria Seeley, Gweneth Taylor, Donna Erickson and Maymetta Johnson served delicious refreshments. ; home for them. She taught them the principles of the gospel and during this time, Dora learned to love books and would often go into the hayloft where it was peaceful and ! quiet to read. She graduated from high school in 1937 and attended Snow College for two years. In 1941 she married 7 " - t rf f I iff Y :f,IV C , ' Manila School discovered it's a lot of fun to go skating along with classmates at the Community Center. Students roller skate to raise funds The Pleasant Grove PTA Council discovered kids love rollerskating and it is a successful way to raise needed funds for community PTA activities. Each of the five schools, Valley View, Central, Manila, Lindon and Grovecrest, held their own party at the Pleasant Grove Community Center recently. Manila held their party on a week night while the other four schools chose one of the vacation days during the UEA and deer hunt holidays. Council President Eva Ercan-brac- k reported the Recreation Dept. did an excellent job. They cal-led the dances, played the music and kept the kids under control. The PTA sent out flyers. The children paid $1 to skate with half of the proceeds going to the PTA. The Council needed $30 from each school. Extra profits will be re-turned to the individual schools. Door prizes were given and the PTA gave the children either a cookie or sucker following the two- - hour party. Families were invited to partici-pate and a few mothers skated and some rs enjoyed the in-vitation to come with a brother or sister. The kids had a good time, had their share of spills and it was fun to watch. The Recreation Dept. will assist others desiring to raise funds. There is a lot of time for Christ-mas parties during the school vaca-tion.
