Show Review - Wednesday, May 1, 1985 - Page 5 Local doggers land in Japan The Country Rhythm Cloggers left Friday for Japan where they will represent the United States in the Japan Expo '85. The group, under the direction of Mark and Debbe Williams, flew to Los Angeles and then to Seoul, Korea and then on to Tokyo. They will return May 12 after spending the final three days in Honolulu. Several adults made the trip with the Cloggers and brochures prepared by the Pleasant Grove-Lindo- n Area Chamber of Commerce were taken along to give out on their trip. The group took gifts from the people of Pleasant Grove and the state of Utah to give to dignitaries in Japan. The cloggers will perform with representatives of other foreign countries at the Expo. They were also slated to meet with the Prime Minister of Japan. The Country Rhythm Cloggers were asked to attend the Expo as the U. S. representative at. the suggestion of Mary Bee Jensen, director of the BYU Folkdancers. Some of the dance group and their leaders met with Governor Norman Bangerter Thursday to receive items to take to Japan to give to the Prime Minister. Mayor David Holdaway presented a book for the group to take at a special tour performance held two weeks ago. Country Rhythm Cloggers are composed of male and female dancers from the North Utah County area and consist of young children through teenagers. Balloons were sent aloft during Library Week at the school. Balloons soar all the way to Minnesota from Lindon tied their balloons together and they were found in a tree at a home in rural Climax, Minnesota on April 20. The return letter said, "These balloons sure came a long way. "The Lindon School children had fastened a card with their name, the school and its address, and how many books they had read for Library Week, onto the balloons and they had then let them go on a very windy day. This was just one of several ac-tivities slated at Lindon School to celebrate Library Week. Five students from Lindon School received a big thrill last week when they received responses to cards they had sent aloft attached to balloons on April 17. Veradene Walker, librarian at the school, said that Joel Hemingway, a second grader in Miss Karingilla's room, received a letter from Fargo, North Dakota, saying that his balloon was found at 1 a.m. at the North Dakota Air National Guard parking lot. The finder sent Joel some pictures of aircraft, Iceland, and a Russian Bear. He was very excited about the response, Mrs. Walkersaid. Darren Ruth and Cody Scott tied their red and blue balloons together and they were found by an eighth grader from River Junior High School in Kemmerer, Wyo. She found them on April 18. She said that Darren's red balloon had popped but Cody's blue one was 'still inflated when she found them. Nathan Penrod and Cory Pierce from Mrs. Black's second grade also Brett Zabel Gladys Norton retires after 29 years with Bayly Corp. r- .. v v- - - Gladys Norton retired from Bayly Corporation, Pleasant Grove, with 29 years service on Friday, April 26. Gladys began with Bayly in 1955 in Visalia, Calif. She has worked in their Visalia, Greeley, Sanger and Pleasant 'Grove plants doing many jobs. She has worked as supervisor, operator, quality checker and samples coordinator. Gladys and husband, Al, live in Orem where they have a beautiful home and yard. Gladys plans to spend a lot of time helping Al get things in order at home. She also plans to travel back east to family reunions and other "roots" visits. She will spend time with her family. She is an excellent cook and seamstress and shares her talents with all her friends and neighbors. They are the parents of two children, Candace and Lawrence, plus two "great and three grandchildren. We at Bayly's wish her well in her retirement. She has been a dedicated and outstanding em-ployee. Several partieswere given in her honor at the Bayly Plant and also a dinner party was given at The Bungalow. Gladys Norton Annual Scout-a-Ram- a slated There will be a sweepstakes award presented to the most out-standing booth. In addition, there will be awards given, first, second, and third for cubs, scouts and varsity and a first place for exploring. All scouts and leaders par-ticipating in the Scout-o-ram- a booth will receive a participation award. At this years Scout-o-ram- a, they will be having a scout show every hour for 10 minutes. During this time, the scouts will present special scout talents, skits, skills and any other scout entertainment. So plan to attend the big District Scouting event of the year. Attention all Cubmasters, Scoutmasters,, Varsity and Explorer leaders! Timpanogos District is sponsoring a Scout-o-ram- a on Saturday, May 4. Under the direction of Dave Thurgood, the event will be held at Lindon Park from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the gate at the Scout-o-ram- There will be booths set up for all ages of scouts to visit. There will be a See and Do trail. There will be some special events for the scouts to participate in. Some of the events will be: The Grand Prix Derby, Rain Gutter Regatta, Rocket Derby. Brett Zabel receives Eagle Badge in special rites Brett Zabel of the Pleasant Grove 19th Ward was honored in a Ward Eagle Court of Honor on April 24. Brett is the son of K. Allan and Nancy J. Zabel. He is a junior at Pleasant Grove High School. He is active in basketball and will be in the A cappella choir next year. He has been selected as an outs-tanding student of the month in the 5th, 10th, and 11th grades. He has served on the Junior High School Seminary Council as V.P. for devotionals. Brett is active in his ward, having served as president of his deacons and teachers quorums. Brett is Timberline trained in scouting and has served as a trained Den Chief. He has earned his Arrow of Light, Duty to God Trail Award, Faith in God Award, and On My Honor Award. . As his eagle project, Brett made easels for his ward's' meetinging house library. He financed the project by putting on a Christmas Carnival for neighbrohood children.
